Fortinet FortiAP 231G Wi-Fi 6E access point

SKU: FAP-231G-A Category: Brand: Fortinet

Description

The exciting Fortinet FortiAP 231G Wi-Fi 6E access point is almost here! It is a tri-radio access point with 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz radios and two spatial streams. It supports the 6 GHz band, and has a 2.5 Gigabit ethernet port. Plus, it provides 24/7 scanning across all bands while still providing access on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Or, it can provide 2.4 Ghz and dual 5 GHz service.

Or this access point can be configured to provide simultaneous access on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and the 6 GHz bands. This access point can reach data rates of up to 574 Mbps on radio 1, 1.201 Gbps on radio 2, and 2.401 Gbps on radio 3.

What’s so great about Wi-Fi 6E?

Wi-Fi 6E is the industry name for devices that will operate in 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 6 and previous generations of Wi-Fi use the 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. When it comes to “Wi-Fi 6E” devices, they’re the ones that is capable of operating on the 6 GHz band, too. It’s important to realize that Wi-Fi 6 was not just a simple speed boost. Benefits of it will expand over time, but more contiguous wider channels with less interference are two other immediate positive impacts.

And Wi-Fi 6E offers the features and capabilities of Wi-Fi6—including higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates. It just extends into the 6 GHz band. And that extrapolates the benefits of having gigabit speeds at extremely low latency and high capacity. There are a number of improvements in Wi-Fi 6 that are actually delivered by Wi-Fi 6E. Here’s a few cool things about Wi-Fi 6E devices like the FortiAP 231G:

  • MU-MIMO: allows more downlink data to transfer at once and enables an access point to transmit data to a larger number of devices concurrently
  • 160 MHz channels: increases bandwidth to deliver greater performance with low latency
  • Target wake time (TWT): greatly improves battery life in Wi-Fi devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation mode (1024-QAM): increases throughput in Wi-Fi devices by encoding more data in the same amount of spectrum
  • Transmit beamforming: enables higher data rates at a given range resulting in greater network capacity
  • Orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA): effectively shares channels to increase network efficiency and lower latency for both uplink and downlink traffic in high demand environments

How’s it different?

The basic idea behind Wi-Fi 6E is straightforward, it’s the same Wi-Fi 6 technology. But it’s extended to the 6GHz frequency where Wi-Fi technology has not had regulatory clearance to operate.  Of course, when you dig in a bit, there’s a bit more to it than that. The 6 GHz spectrum will work similarly to Wi-Fi 6 over 5 GHz. But one new thing is, it offers additional non-overlapping channels and contiguous spectrum. As per WFA it allows 14 additional 80 MHz channels and 7 additional 160 MHz channels. These channels wouldn’t overlap with each other, which will help reduce congestion, especially in crowded and densely populated environments.

That translates into faster speed, lower latency and higher capacity. We can’t wait to tell you more about Fortinet’s smokin’new Wi-Fi 6E devices.
