SonicWall TZ270 Next-Gen firewall

The cutting-edge SonicWall TZ270 Next-Gen firewall is ideal for home offices and lean branches. The 7 series is the latest SonicWall TZ series. Not only that, they are the first desktop next-generation firewalls with 10 or 5 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

It has industry-validated security effectiveness, and is great for up to 10 users. The SonicWall TZ270 delivers 2.0 Gbps firewall throughput and 750 Mbps VPN throughput, running SonicWall’s new SonicOS 7.0. This means it can handle all the latest and greatest security and networking features out there. And SonicWall is a vendor known for feature-rich firewalls. It also means it can address the growing trends in web encryption, connected devices and high-speed mobility.

Hardware

The TZ series is built to be highly scalable. It has high port density of up to 10 ports. It features both inbuilt and an expandable storage of up to 256GB. This enables various features including logging, reporting, caching, firmware backup and more. Things are further simplified by the all-important Zero-Touch Deployment. This means you can simultaneously roll out these devices across multiple locations with minimal IT support. The next-gen hardware also integrates firewalling, switching and wireless capabilities. Not only that, it provides single-pane-of-glass management for SonicWall Switches and SonicWave Access Points, as well.

Software

The SonicOS architecture is at the core of TZ series. The SonicWall TZ270 Next-Gen firewall is powered by the feature rich SonicOS 7.0. It has a new, sleek interface. But at least as importantly, it delivers advanced security, networking, and management capabilities. It also features integrated SD-WAN, TLS 1.3 support, real-time visualization, high-speed VPN and other robust security features.

Unknown threats go straight to SonicWall’s cloud-based Capture Advanced Threat Protection multiengine sandbox for analysis. This is a powerful cloud-based sandbox with malware-analysis that can detect evasive threats. Capture ATP blocks suspicious files at the gateway until a verdict is rendered. Enhancing Capture ATP is SonicWall’s patent-pending Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection technology. RTDMI detects and blocks malware and zero-day threats by inspecting directly in memory.

By leveraging Capture ATP with RTDMI technology, in addition to extensive security services, the TZ series firewalls stop malware, ransomware and other advanced threats at the gateway. Some of those other services are Application Intelligence and Control, and Content Filtering Services.

Features of the SonicWall TZ270 Next-Gen firewall

The SonicWall TZ270 also has Reassembly Free Deep Packet Inspection. This offers security analysis of all traffic in real-time. It also offers anti-malware, anti-spyware, and intrusion prevention. Plus, you get anti-spam and protection against incoming email-based threats if you’re configured for it.

And, if you work remotely, you’re still good to go. First, remote users can set up a secure VPN tunnel back into the home network. Each SonicWall TZ270 can support 25 site-to-site VPN connections simultaneously.

There’s also TLS 1.3 support to inspect encrypted traffic, 24×7 support, and Secure SD-WAN.

In addition to multi-layer sandboxing, Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection, and full system emulation, it has virtualization techniques to detect more threats than any single-engine sandbox out there currently. And the low false-positive rate means it won’t block the legitimate business files you need.

Once configured, the firewall keeps itself updated with the latest threat signatures. This means that small to medium-sized businesses can have a single device protecting their networks, without having to worry about updating software on every client. If the wireless 802.11ac radio is online, then that protection can also extend to anyone using the wireless network. SonicWall offers great security for those who don’t always sit at an office desk.

And more features

One of the best things about the SonicWall TZ270 is that you can add modules, or features, as needed. It’s an a la carte approach that’s great for small to medium-sized businesses. In other words, businesses that may not need to pay for full-on enterprise level security. Nevertheless, it’s quite easy to add the modules in when you decide to.

SonicWall’s cloud-management and sandboxing is a cool feature worth mentioning. When any of the myriad SonicWall devices linked together in the cloud discovers an unknown malware, guess what it does? Shares it with every other SonicWall. So that unknown malware becomes famous to every SonicWall appliance everywhere that’s using the SonicWall Capture Advanced Threat Protection module.

And a big benefit of cloud-sandboxing is that it’s not limited to one engine. SonicWall uses several of them, so it’s nearly impossible to create malware that could trick all of them.

Who’s it for?

The SonicWall TZ270 is priced and powered into the entry-to-midlevel end of the SMB range. And remember, with its modular feature set, it is hugely scalable. To take full advantage of its security, connectivity, & management features, choose a services bundle. TotalSecure Advanced Edition covers all the bases. The somewhat less comprehensive Essential and Threat Editions is so available. SonicWall security bundles come in one, three, and five year subscription options.
