Meraki is releasing the first of its’ third-generation MV series smart cameras. They are the Meraki MV63 Smart HD Camera, and the Meraki MV93 Smart HD camera.
With the MV63 and MV93 series of enterprise surveillance cameras, Meraki does what it always does: Impossibly easy to set up and operate. And these cameras come with everything needed right in the box. As a matter of fact, you can add cameras to a network before they even arrive, and adjust optical and software settings remotely.
Plus, not only can you manage these cameras from a central dashboard, but you can do it from your phone. The ease of use is really crucial to having a smoothly operating, transparent network.
All MV cameras shoot in HD and contain internal solid-state storage. In fact, the MV63 and MV93 have 256GB of it (with an option for 1TB). Plus, they have a smartphone-grade processor. With loads of storage space, these smart HD cameras could potentially store over a month of video. As a result, they are excellent for surveilling remote locations like warehouses.
The “X” factor
In addition, there will be an MV63X and an MV93X. The difference is that the MV63X and the MV93X will have 1TB of on-board storage, instead of the 256GB for the standard models. They also have higher video resolution. The MV63 has up to 4MP resolution, whereas the MV63X has up to 4K. The MV93 boasts up to 2112×2112, and the MV93X reaches 2880×2880. These are both outdoor-rated cameras.
What’s the difference between the Meraki MV63 and the Meraki MV93?
The MV63 is a fixed-lens mini dome camera. The MV93 is a 360-degree, fisheye lens camera. And with storage capabilities from 256GB to 1TB, these new cameras meet the need for longer on-board storage with greater visibility in outdoor settings.
Given the differences between these two, the MV63 is great for outdoor areas like entrances and exits. It combines detail needed for identification of individuals, with larger area context.
On the other hand, the MV93 is perfect for any outdoor environment that requires 360-degree visibility. It’s ideal for deployments requiring visibility across an open area, like parking lots and garages, including manufacturing environments. The MV93 can also be used in indoor environments when IR illumination is required. In scenarios that require wall-mounted installation, longer on-board storage or higher resolution, only MV93 can satisfy all these requirements.
Cool features of the MV63 and the MV93
All four cameras have long-range built-in IR illuminators and low light mode (incidentally, this feature is lacking in the MV32, Meraki’s indoor-rate fisheye camera). They all support wireless connectivity with an ethernet PoE injector (like the other models). Plus, the MV63 and MV93 series have built-in microphones to capture audio when enabled.
These cameras also have a switch on the back of the camera to help with an additional layer of control to enable or disable the microphone as needed. And, they both have a IP67 weather-proofing and IK10+ vandal-resistance rating. Both can operate in temperatures between -40°C – 50°C (-40°F – 122°F).
Then what’s the difference between the Meraki MV63 and the MV72?
MV63 is a fixed lens camera with a wide field of view The MV72 has a varifocal lens and FoV ranging from 36-112 degrees. This means the MV72 offers greater field of view and flexibility. It can be used to provide good overall
context of a scene or focus in on a specific area to give greater detail at a distance. The MV63 has a fixed FoV, but it does offer higher resolution which may be needed for identification and/or license plate recognition.
As a result, the MV63 is best for monitoring a general area, but it will lose detail the farther away the subject is from the camera. The MV72 or MV52 can complement the MV63 with their ability to zero in at a distance.
And remember, the cloud-based MV interface is imminently friendly to use. Wouldn’t be a Meraki if it wasn’t.
